Altea is a municipality and town in Spain, located on the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Alicante, about 50 kilometers northeast of the city of Alicante and about 100 kilometers south of the city of Valencia. Altea has an area of 34 km² and has 21.739 inhabitants. In the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century, Altea also became a meeting place for all kinds of artists, painters, writers, etc., which also gave it the name of an artist city.
The city is still considered an important cultural place and is the Cultural Capital of the Valencia region. In 2001, the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University Miguel Hernández of Elche (UMH) was also established here. The Palau de Altea is a music and convention center with 859 seats.
